Most modern fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA) — a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that holds water, hydrates and adds volume. Because HA is a naturally occurring substance, the body breaks it down gradually, so results are long-lasting but not permanent, typically lasting 9–15 months depending on the type of filler and the area of the face treated.

There are different types of dermal fillers formulated for different jobs: softer gels for delicate areas of the face such as the lips and tear troughs, and firmer gels to lift and contour the cheeks or jawline. There’s no set age, it depends on your concern and anatomy, not a number. Many patients start in their 30s or 40s as volume loss begins, but a consultation will tell you whether filler is right for you yet.

Do dermal fillers make you look fake?

Not when done well. An over-filled look comes from too much product placed in isolation. A conservative, full-face approach keeps results natural.

Which areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Can dermal fillers lift the face?

Filler can create a lifting effect by restoring volume and support to areas like the cheeks — though it works differently from a surgical lift.

Are dermal fillers the same as anti-wrinkle injections?

No. They do different things: dermal fillers restore lost volume and contour, while muscle-relaxing injections soften expression lines. Which (if either) suits you is discussed at consultation.

What are the risks of dermal fillers?

Common effects are mild swelling or bruising. Rarer, more serious risks relate to blood vessels, which is why a medically trained injector and proper protocols matter.

How much filler do I need?

Often less than people expect. The aim is balance, not volume — Dr Effie recommends the minimum needed for a natural result.

Are dermal fillers reversible?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved using hyaluronidase if there is a clinical reason to do so.

I keep hyaluronidase at the clinic and am trained to use it when correcting an unsuitable result or managing a complication.

Dissolving filler is still a medical procedure. It needs to be properly assessed rather than treated as a quick reset button.

What happens when filler dissolves?

HA filler breaks down gradually and your face returns to its baseline. HA filler can also be dissolved early with hyalase if needed.
