What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels are a great treatment for treating signs of ageing and uneven skin tone and enhancing the complexion to leave your skin soft, supple and with a powerful radiant glow. Chemical peels are applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.
The peel works to disrupt the superficial cells and are then neutralised to reveal a brighter tone and texture one shedding has subsided. Chemical Peels are a superb non invasive alternative to injectable treatments that offer dramatic results from the very first treatment.
Chemical peels vary significantly in strength from a light exfoliation with no downtime to deeper peels to treat pigmentation and deep lines. The milder peels are available for consistent maintenance for healthy skin.
Skin peels aren’t a one-size-fits-all procedure.
At Epitomi Aesthetics Dr Effie will provide a thorough consultation, in which your skin will be assessed and you can discuss your most pressing skin problems. Whether you are hoping to combat acne or oily skin, sun damage, or rosacea, we provide a comprehensive choice of peels to guarantee your skin receives the most suitable treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have a chemical peel straight away?
In order to get the best results for our patience and to limit the chances of any adverse reactions, you are recommended products to pre-prime your skin for at least two weeks before we start your treatments and for continued use afterwards.
This gets your skin used to pharmaceutical grade products with active ingredients. That said there are some highly superficial peels which can give an instant glow. There are certain skin care products that will need to be stopped two weeks prior the treatment, which is why a consultation is always needed before a course of treatment is agreed on.
What to expect from a chemical peel?
After cleansing your skin, the selected peel is applied and left on for a short time, on average between 4-8 minutes.
You should only feel some tingling or burning sensation that will lasts minutes and your comfort is always closely monitored throughout the procedure.
After the peel is removed, the appropriate skin care is applied and most importantly a factor 50 SPF. With the medium peels you will leave the clinic with the peel applied and tend to remove it at the end of the day.
Depending on the strength of the peel you make experience some flaking after a few days (peeling tends to start around day 3 and completes by day 7) but we always start your course with a highly superficial peel where it’s most likely there will be no flaking at all.
This will all be discussed during your initial consultation and your lifestyle will be taken into account when factoring in any (only ever minimal) downtime.
Are there any side effects to chemical peels?
Once the treatment is complete you will generally feel flushed, a little tight and potentially have some redness depending on your skin type.
The redness reduces within the hour.
Shedding of the skin will begin a couple of days post treatment and is a normal and essential part of the treatment process.
You should not pick or peel the shedding skin, allowing it to fall away naturally, revealing your beautiful new complexion beneath.
