Frequently asked questions
What are anti-wrinkle injections used for?
Anti-wrinkle injections are used in aesthetics to smooth crow’s feet, forehead furrows, frown lines, lip lines andbunny lines, diminish neck bands, improve the appearance of skin dimpling of the chin, lift the corners of the mouth and correct a gummy smile.
How do anti-wrinkle injections work?
Anti-wrinkle injections work by blocking the transition of chemical messages sent from the nerve to cause the muscle to contract. Without these messages, the muscle stays in a resting state until the ‘messengers’ recover.

Are anti-wrinkle injections right for me?
Maybe. There are many treatments available which can address fine lines, wrinkles, and premature ageing. Anti-wrinkle injections are one of these, and in order to determine what the best treatment plan is, you need to book a consultation where Dr. Effie can discuss your aims and concerns and medical history, and work with you to determine a bespoke treatment plan. There are many anti-wrinkle treatments available, and anti-wrinkle injections are not right for everybody, but they do have a place in many treatment plans.
Can anyone have Anti-Wrinkle Injections?
No. There are reasons that people can’t have these kinds of injections.
These include:
- People with a known allergy to botulinum toxin.
- People with certain neuromuscular conditions.
- Pregnant or Breastfeeding women.
- Anyone under the age of 18.
Additionally, anti-wrinkle injections may not be suitable for other reasons (e.g. they won’t achieve what you want to achieve, and another treatment may be more suitable instead).
How long does the treatment take?
Treatments with anti-wrinkle injections generally take around 30 minutes.
What does it feel like?
Some patients may experience a mild stinging sensation form the injection but the discomfort experienced is minimal as a very fine needle is used. No local anaesthetic is required. Any small bumps at the site of injection usually resolve within 30 minutes, with no significant downtime.
How many sessions do I need?
Typically, one session is recommended every 3 to 4 months. Over time the treatment will wear off and movement will slowly come back.
What are the benefits?
The potential aesthetic benefits of anti-wrinkle injections are:
- They are relatively painless way to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and premature ageing.
- They carry a low risk of complications
- They have little-to-no downtime
What does a patient need to do before having anti-wrinkle injections?
Prior to an appointment we ask that patients should do the following:
- Avoid wearing make-up / fake tan to your appointment.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure 4 weeks prior to treatment.
- Avoid using Retinol and active creams 48 hours prior to treatment.
- Avoid abrasive treatments such as laser, waxing and chemical peels 2 weeks prior to treatment.
Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?
Anti-wrinkle injections were first approved for use in 1989 and when delivered by an experienced medical professional are very safe.
Are there any potential side effects?
Most side effects of anti-wrinkle injections are usually temporary and restricted to the area of injection.
Common side effects include, redness, bruising, swelling and headache.
Rarely there can be drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid, with possible double vision which is very rare.
Overtreating can be another side-effect however anti-wrinkle injections are only temporary.
Patients who have been having anti-wrinkle injections for a long time can build antibodies meaning the effects not working. If this is the case another brand of injection could resolve the issue.
It is important that you only allow registered medical professionals to perform anti-wrinkle injections to ensure that the procedure is performed as safely as possible, and so that any issues can be identified and treated.
Risks and benefits will be fully discussed during your consultation if anti-wrinkle injections are determined as being potentially suitable for you, and before having the treatment a consent form will need to be signed which also details potential side effects
When can I expect to see results?
The effect of the treatment typically begins around three days but it may take up to 14 days to see full results. Everyone is different.
What aftercare should I follow?
Do’s
- Drink lots of water.
- Keep your head elevated 4 hours after treatment.
- Avoid hot drinks straight after for a couple of hours; this can dilate the blood vessels and result in more bruising
Don’ts
- Drink alcohol for 24 hours; it can increase swelling and bruising.
- Exercise for 24 hours.
- Rub or massage the area.
